Movie Picks of the Week: 16th September 2019

We present a look at the five movies we recommend that you check out in the week ahead.

12 Angry Men

Starring Henry Fonda, Lee J Cobb and Jack Klugman. 1957.

First up is courtroom drama 12 Angry Men. This classic movie is possibly the most famous adaptation of the play which began on television. It is the story of a jury who must assess the guilt of an 18 year old murder suspect. Made up of 12 very different people, things in the jury room become very volatile. 12 Angry Men is on Film4 on Monday 16th September 2019 at 12.50 pm. Running time: 96 minutes.

Hound of the Baskervilles

Starring Peter Cushing, Andre Morell and Christopher Lee. 1959.

Next we come to this adaptation of the most famous Sherlock Holmes story. Although not particularly faithful to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s writing in either plot points or mood, this Hammer horror film is worth a watch. Hound of the Baskervilles is on Film4 on Thursday 19th September 2019 at 11 am. Running time: 87 minutes.

Stagecoach

Starring John Wayne, Claire Trevor and Andy Devine. 1939.

John Ford’s masterpiece and Wayne’s first big starring role. Wayne stars as the Ringo Kid, who has escaped from prison to avenge his family’s death. Before he can be apprehended, he must help the stagecoach passengers cross dangerous territory to reach their destination safely. Look out for the first use of the now famous picturesque location Monument Valley. Stagecoach is available via Amazon Prime Video. Running time: 96 minutes.

Notorious

Starring Cary Grant, Ingrid Bergman and Claude Rains. 1946.

Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, Notorious is a film noir. Grant, Bergman and Rains are caught up in a dangerous game of espionage just after World War Two. Matters are further complicated by a romance between Grant and Bergman’s characters. Notorious is on Talking Pictures TV on Friday 20th September 2019 at 12 pm. Running time: 101 minutes.

No Kidding

Starring Leslie Phillips, Geraldine McEwan, Irene Handl, Joan Hickson and Julia Lockwood. 1960.

Lastly we have a comedy from legendary director Gerald Thomas, of Carry On fame. No Kidding concerns a couple who are determined to make a successful business from their run-down country house. Fun and chaos ensue when they open up as a holiday home for children. No Kidding is on Talking Pictures TV on Saturday 21st September 2019 at 5.45 pm. Running time: 86 minutes.
