British channel Rewind TV will broadcast the ATV sitcom A Sharp Intake of Breath, starring David Jason. According to Cordbusters, the series will begin airing on the 24th of June, 2025.
What is A Sharp Intake of Breath?
Made by ATV, A Sharp Intake of Breath is a sitcom centred around the everyday frustrations of ordinary man Peter Barnes, played by David Jason. Each episode explores the petty obstacles and red tape he encounters, often delivered with a knowing sigh or the titular intake of breath from unhelpful officials and figures of authority.
The show originally aired on ITV from 1977 to 1981 and ran for 22 episodes over four series. The series was created and written by Ronnie Taylor. Alongside Jason, Jacqueline Clarke co-stars as his supportive wife Sheila, with a rotating cast of actors—such as Richard Wilson and Alun Armstrong—appearing in multiple roles as the bureaucrats and jobsworths standing in Peter’s way.
The UK’s Rewind TV and the ever-growing schedule!
Rewind TV is a British channel on Sky (182) and Freeview (92). It features several classic television shows and movies from around the world. The schedule has included ITC series like Department S and The Prisoner. Other broadcast shows, some of which haven’t been aired for some time, include The Cuckoo Waltz, The Monkees, Dick Turpin, and Hancock.

I remember a time when these gems were hidden away, now they have a renewed life! It was delightful to see David Jason in an early role that helped build up his career, Lucky Feller, which recently aired on the channel. Seeing this material helps us understand that the actor didn’t just become Del Boy; it took years of training on the set of various shows.
A Sharp Intake of Breath, another early starring vehicle for Jason, made shortly before he first played Del Boy Trotter in Only Fools and Horses. It was unseen for years until it saw a home media release in 2015, then was picked up by Gold for a short while. It is great to see it appear on our screens again via Rewind TV.
