British channel Rewind TV will soon broadcast the classic British sitcom The Lovers, starring Paula Wilcox and Richard Beckinsale. The series will begin airing on the 5th of January 2026, with episodes scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. It is one of many new shows due to arrive on the channel in January 2026.
What is The Lovers?

The Lovers follows the lives of a young courting couple, Geoffrey and Beryl, who have different attitudes towards sex and marriage. Richard Beckinsale (Porridge) and Paula Wilcox (Man About the House) play the lead characters. The supporting cast includes Joan Scott and Robin Nedwell.
Made by Granada Television, it was written by Jack Rosenthal. It ran for 13 episodes over 2 series between 1970 and 1971. The first series was directed by Michael Apted, the second by Les Chatfield. A film was released in 1973.
What is Rewind TV
Rewind TV is a British channel available on Sky (182) and Freeview (81). It showcases a variety of classic television shows and movies from around the world. The channel has continued to add titles each month to its ever-growing schedule, many from the vaults of various ITV regions.
In addition to The Lovers, Rewind TV has announced the addition of The Dustbinmen, The Fenn Street Gang and The Top Secret Life of Edgar Briggs to the schedule. We will continue to inform you about further changes when they are announced.

What a delightful surprise from Rewind TV! I love how they continue to find series that haven’t been broadcast for a while, but are still fondly remembered. I purchased this series on DVD many years ago, when it was the only way to get it, and enjoyed the two leads. It is a snapshot of Britain in the early 70s, especially the attitudes towards certain ideas that have changed over time.
I recall that Les Dawson once referenced The Lovers in one of his routines, a joke that became lost over time as the series faded into obscurity. Airings on broadcast television bring it back into the public consciousness by making it accessible to a wider audience. Suddenly, references you heard in various places make sense! If you’ve ever heard anyone mention “Percy filth”, here is the origin!
