Good news! The original series of The Clangers has just been added to ITVX’s “Old School Classics” collection. All 26 episodes of the Smallfilms production, which began in 1969, are now available to watch on the ad-supported platform.
What is The Clangers?
The Clangers first aired on BBC television in 1969. It ran for twenty-six episodes over 2 series, ending in 1972. A special was broadcast in 1974. Produced and directed by Oliver Postgate with Peter Firmin’s art and models, the series followed beings from outer space. The community included the family of pink Clangers, including Mother Clanger and Major Clanger, as well as such favourites as Soup Dragon, Baby Soup Dragon, Froglets and the Iron Chicken. Alongside producing the stop-frame animation, Oliver Postgate also provided the narration.
After the passing of Postgate, The Clangers were revived in 2015
ITVX and the “Old School Classics Collection”
The “Old School Classics Collection” began on Britbox UK. When ITV became the full owner of the streaming service in the UK, it was folded into ITVX. Since then, the amount of classic children’s television has grown into a fairly thorough collection.
The titles in this collection, which span from the 1960s to the 2000s, include well-known shows such as Fireman Sam, Paddington, Roobarb, Press Gang, Thunderbirds, The Trumptonshire Trilogy, and Catweazle, among many others. Additional titles from Postgate and Firmin include Bagpuss and Ivor the Engine.

I love this show! This is one of those classic series that is of its moment, yet timeless all the same. There’s magic in those cuddly pink mouse-like creatures, thanks to the cute design work of Peter Firmin. While Postgate’s ideas and animation have a surreal quality at times, it’s still incredibly engaging. (Whistles with excitement!
I’m loving where ITVX are going with these additions, and hope they will continue to grow their library of classic children’s television. It is fast becoming my app for streaming such content, and it’s free! Hopefully, there won’t be any buffering, and we won’t need to say “Oh sod it, the bl**dy things stuck again!”
