Pluto TV UK, an ad-supported streaming platform, has added a channel dedicated to the classic sitcom Taxi. It is available to stream via the app and runs for 24 hours a day.
What is Taxi?
Taxi first aired on ABC between 1978 and 1982, before switching to NBC for a year until it ended in 1983. In total, it racked up 114 episodes over 5 series. The show focuses on the employees who work the night shift at the fictional Sunshine Cab Company, and its principal setting is the company’s fleet garage in Manhattan.
The series starred Judd Hirsch as Alex Rieger, a level-headed cab driver navigating life and work. In addition to Hirsch, the main cast included Danny DeVito as short-tempered dispatcher Louie De Palma and Marilu Henner as single mother Elaine Nardo. Other cast included Tony Danza, Christopher Lloyd and Andy Kaufman.
It won multiple awards during its run, including 18 Emmy awards and 4 Golden Globes.

Pluto TV is one of those apps that I dip into occasionally, especially when I’m in the mood for watching something but don’t know what. These channels dedicated to iconic TV are an easy option for dipping in and out, providing a burst of pleasure. I once watched a rerun of Taxi when it aired on BBC2 in the 90s, and later on CBS Drama, but I haven’t seen much.
This doesn’t give a measured opportunity to watch it in its entirety, but I’ll take anything I can get. I’ve always been fascinated by this series, as it dug deep for a sitcom. It tackled quite a lot of serious subjects for its time, demonstrating the power of the form to be relatable and get messages across. This show is also notable for its starry cast, including the legendary actor Danny DeVito!
