That’s TV will broadcast the classic BBC children’s drama Grange Hill on its main channel. The news was first teased via a video of the opening titles on their social media. As of the 2nd of October, no air date has been announced.
There is no indication on where in the series it will start, or how long the run will be for.
What is Grange Hill
Set in the fictional comprehensive school of Grange Hill, the series covered a wide range of social and school issues during its run. Created by Phil Redmond, it first aired on the BBC in 1978, running for 30 years until 2008. 601 episodes were broadcast over 31 series.
The show’s initial cast of characters, who were starting secondary school, included Tucker Jenkins (Todd Carty), Trisha Yates (Michelle Herbert), Alan Humphies (George Armstrong) and Benny Green (Terry Sue Patt) among many others. Teachers in the first two series included Mr Mitchell (Michael Percival), and Mr Baxter (Michael Cronin). The theme tune was Chicken Man by Alan Hawkshaw.
The Progression of That’s TV
The That’s TV network has significantly increased its offering of classic TV in recent years. What started as a single channel airing reruns of Benny Hill and Kenny Everett has expanded into multiple channels with classic programming.
Current shows include Home to Roost, Bread, Duty Free, Goodnight Sweetheart and Rising Damp. We will continue to publicise future additions following their announcement.
That’s TV is available to view on Freeview (56), Sky (171), Freesat (164, Freely (42) and Virgin (150).
Jamie’s Reaction
Well, this was a surprise. The opening titles, featuring the sausage on a fork, are legendary and the perfect way to tease this announcement. It’s instantly recognisable. I have seen around 9 series of this show, and its still as gripping as ever. It was groundbreaking in its time for touching on hard subjects in it’s storylines, and it has lost none of its power.
Although the show hit the real peak of its powers during the Zammo storyline in the mid-80s, the show’s early years still have many memorable moments. From apparatus being thrown into a pool, to the many hi-jinks that Tucker and his mates get up to. Watch out for the teachers’ too, as their daily struggles are painfully close to the realities of life! This is why you should give it a try.
Although this show has been available on ITVX, it’s been behind a paywall. Thank you to That’s TV for giving it a free-to-air platform once again.
