ITVX viewers have just got another dose of classic children’s television to add to the watchlist: All three series of Cosgrove Hall’s Chorlton and the Wheelies are now available to stream! The show joins other former Thames animated programming on the platform, Jamie and the Magic Torch and Button Moon.
What is Chorlton and the Wheelies?
Chorlton and the Wheelies was first broadcast in 1976. It was made by Cosgrove Hall Productions for Thames Television, running for 40 11-minute episodes over 3 series. The show followed the adventures of Chorlton, an anthropomorphic happiness dragon, in “Wheelie World”, a place where people move around on wheels. The villain is Fenella the Kettle Witch.
Brian Trueman wrote the series, and it features voices by Joe Lynch. Joe Griffiths composed the music.
ITVX’s Expanding Collection of Children’s Television
Even though the CITV brand ceased broadcasting some time ago, ITV’s streaming service is fast becoming the home for classic children’s TV. Originally beginning as an “Old School Classics” section on ITV-owned Britbox, succeeded by ITVX Premium, the collection has become mostly free to watch in the last few months, with new titles added regularly.
Other programs available to stream on ITVX include Fireman Sam, Paddington, Worzel Gummidge, Bagpuss, the Trumptonshire Trilogy and The Racoons, among others. We will continue to update when new titles are announced.
Jamie’s Reaction
How wonderful to see ITV continuing to add classic children’s programming to their streaming lineup, many of which will be a happy nostalgia trip for viewers of certain ages. I would guess that Chorlton and the Wheelies isn’t the most seen title, but hopefully it’ll gain a new appreciation on a free streaming service. The show is also available to stream on Amazon Prime, as part of a subscription.
I have seen very little of this show, but it does have a certain charm to it. Through a modern lens, there is a rusticness to it, a long way from the clean stop-frame style of studios like Aardman. It’ll be interesting to see how well the storytelling holds up; many viewers of an age still talk about the witch in this show! I look forward to my visit to Wheelie World!
